The vaulted arches of a cathedral are magnificent feats of interdependence. Each stone bares weight of its neighbor and contributes to the support of the entire building. The University of Notre Dame is an educational cathedral in the making. It is a towering system of values, ideas, hopes, and dreams. The images in this print pay tribute to the great tradition on which the school was built, the faith that protects it, and the passion that will inspire people to carve their stone in the future.
The four central figures symbolize the spirit of the Fighting Irish. One holds an infant, one holds a set of plans, one holds a mason’s trowel, and one interlocks arms in support of a figure symbolic of underrepresented people. They stand in a community of men, women, and children surrounded by the vibrant light of the Virgin Mary above.
I began this project shortly after getting married and was able to visit dozens of cathedrals throughout France during our honeymoon. The architecture and light patterns you see in this print are inspired by the sketches, paintings, and 2000 photographs I brought back to my studio from Europe.
The University of Notre Dame is a powerful source of tradition and global leadership. She also kneels down to uplift individuals when they need it. It was not easy being a student athlete at Notre Dame. It was a daily struggle to balance books, practice, weights, and rehab, with my social and intellectual pursuits. I don’t know of any other place that can empower you and humble you, strengthen your mind, body and spirit, and make you proud to be a small part of a great community- a carved stone in a rising cathedral. I hope you and your family will enjoy this print for years to come.
